Chapter 5: Champagne Flutes

“You better slow down or you will be on the floor before 10pm,” Elli growled at him when they met at the champagne table. He raised an eyebrow, reaching to grab another glass. Neither of them missed the fact that his hand went right through empty space and he had to try again.

“Shouldn’t someone be getting you a glass of champagne, Princess?” he replied, taking a gulp for good measure. “Where are your servants?”

“Where’s your mail order bride?” she asked, and he nearly choked.

“What?”

“Do you think I’m an idiot?” she responded. “As soon as you walked in here with her, I put the pieces together. Seriously? The money from the flat isn’t even deposited and you went online to find a bride? What is wrong with you? Or the rest of the girls in this country, for that matter?”

“My experience with the girls in this country have been you,” he answered. “And any girl in this country will fawn over me like I’m a prince that you tried to make me or some decorated war hero.”

“Which you are,” she pointed out, out of genuine confusion. “I certainly didn’t earn those medals for you.”

“But I didn’t earn my place there and you damn well know it,” he replied. “All my adult life has been doing things for you, and, just for once, I wanted to do something for myself. To choose who I want to be with, to help someone other than your charities….God, I must be drunk,” it didn’t stop him from draining the glasses. “Go away, Princess, you bring out the worst in me.”

“Watson,” she answered, trying to fight the urge to hit him across the face. “You can do whatever the hell you want, I don’t care. But I don’t want you to get scammed into…”

“The scam was being a Prince,” he answered bitterly. “So anything other than that is a relief. Now, go.”

“Whatever,” she stalked off on her heels, and he leaned against the table, his head whirling from it. He had once thought that this was repairable, but every time they saw each other, it was so angry, so bitter, that he knew they could never be again. It was a relief, even though she had only been by his side one evening, to be with Poppia, who wasn’t constantly pelting him with angry comments or 12 years of baggage.

Even if he didn’t end up marrying her, he had gotten her out of a bad situation and he would stay with her long enough to make sure she could stay in this country if she wanted to. What he didn’t expect was to actually be falling a tiny bit in love with her, purely because she was pure opposite of the Princess.

He had been with the Princess so long, he had forgotten what he liked, what he looked for in a woman. But Poppia was catching his eye as she stood across the room, talking to a few gentleman who he knew were eying her up.
